Atlanta Falcons Notes, Quotes 2009-02-11
--Running back Michael Turner and defensive end John Abraham were named to the Associated Press 2008 NFL All-Pro teams announced Friday.

Turner, who rushed for 1,699 yards and a team record 17 rushing touchdowns during the regular season, was named to the first team.

Abraham, who set the franchise record for most sacks in a season with 16.5, was named to the second team.

Despite leading all of the defensive ends in sacks, Abraham was not selected to the NFC Pro Bowl team.

"I think it's great," Falcons defensive line coach Ray Hamilton said. "It's a little bit of vindication from John not making the Pro Bowl team. I think it says he's one of the best defensive ends in the NFL, which is what the All-Pro team means."

Abraham played with thigh and shoulder injuries late in the season, but was still productive. He topped his previous career high of 13 sacks in 2001 when he was with the Jets and coached by Hamilton.

"He had a very good year," Hamilton said. "He was very consistent all year long. Whenever ever we needed a big play, we leaned on him to do that.

"I thought he was very consistent and that's not always measured by sacks. John put constant pressure on the quarterback, especially on third down."

The Falcons used Abraham to terrorize quarterbacks from mainly right defensive end, but they would switch it up and move him to the left side on occasions, depending on the matchup.

"There are not very many guys in the league that you have to account for where they are, on passing downs especially," Hamilton said. "John is a guy that you have to account for where he is on passing downs. You have to put somebody over there to help on him, to chip him. But you've got to know where he is on passing downs."

--Turner and wide receiver Roddy White were named to the Pro Bowl. Quarterback Matt Ryan was named the rookie of the year. Head coach Mike Smith was named the coach of the year.

Ryan and Abraham are first-alternates to the Pro Bowl, but will only go if players in front of them are injured or withdraw from the game.

--Falcons coach Mike Smith credited his "Over 30" club with helping this young team. At least one veteran player was in each position meeting room.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Right now we are doing very well and could be players at any level. Whether if it's an 'A' level, 'B' level or 'C' level free agent. We have the wherewithal to do so, but it's a matter of what we deem is the best value and the best business move." -- Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff on if the team would be major players in free agency.
